Context
Robot interoperability arises where distinct robotic systems, components, or supporting systems need to interact despite differences in platforms, interfaces, representations, control structures, or infrastructure.
The relevant compatibility conditions depend on the operational context and the interaction being assessed.
Differentiation
Robot interoperability differs from communication and connectivity by concerning whether distinct systems can interact under the conditions relevant to the operational context, rather than whether a communication path merely exists.
It also differs from integration, modularity, standardization, protocol compliance, coordination, and orchestration, each of which may support or use interoperability without defining the interoperability relation as such.
System Role
This reference provides a system- and vendor-neutral structural description of robot interoperability.
It separates the interoperability relation and its operational boundary from particular middleware, protocols, standards, fleet-management systems, or implementation architectures.
